How the journey works
Most of our Nairobi to Mombasa safari packages run over five to eight days, though shorter and longer options are available on request.
Departure is from Nairobi, with Game drives through Amboseli and Tsavo are conducted in private 4×4 safari vehicles with pop-up roofs for unobstructed wildlife viewing and photography.
At the end of your safari, we transfer you directly to your beach accommodation in Diani, Mombasa, or wherever on the coast you prefer.
Travellers who prefer not to make the full overland journey can opt for the Madaraka Express SGR train, boarding at Voi after your Tsavo game drives and arriving at Mombasa station in comfort.

Frequently asked questions
How many days do I need for a safari from Nairobi to Mombasa or Diani?
Most travellers choose 5 to 8 days. A 5-day trip covers Amboseli, Tsavo East and a night at Salt Lick Lodge before you transfer to the coast.
With 7–8 days you can add the Maasai Mara or Lake Nakuru, or travel at a slower pace.
Your beach stay is added on top and can be as long as you like.
Is it better to drive or fly from the safari to the coast?
Driving/Train is the classic option. You keep game viewing all the way to the coast and avoid backtracking to Nairobi.
Flying saves time and suits travellers who dislike long road days or are adding a far-off park such as the Maasai Mara.
We can also combine the two: road safari first, then the SGR train or a flight to the coast.
Can I take the train from Tsavo to Mombasa?
Yes. Once your Tsavo game drives end, your guide drops you at Voi station on the Madaraka Express (SGR).
The train reaches Mombasa in roughly two hours, and you’re met there and taken to your beach hotel. It’s a comfortable, scenic alternative to the final stretch by road. We book the tickets as part of your itinerary.
How far is Diani Beach from Mombasa?
Diani is about 30–35 km south of Mombasa. Depending on traffic and whether you cross on the Likoni ferry or use the Dongo Kundu bypass, the drive takes about one to two hours. If you’re flying in, Ukunda airstrip is just minutes from the Diani hotels.
Which parks will I visit on the Nairobi to Mombasa route?
The core route covers Amboseli National Park, known for large elephant herds with Mount Kilimanjaro behind them, and Tsavo East, one of Africa’s largest parks.
It also includes Salt Lick Lodge in the Taita Hills, where wildlife gathers at a floodlit waterhole overnight. Tsavo West, the Maasai Mara or Lake Nakuru can be added on request.
What is the best time of year for a safari and beach holiday in Kenya?
The dry seasons, June to October and December to March, give the best game viewing and the most reliable beach weather. April and May bring the long rains, so some coastal hotels close or offer lower rates.
Tsavo and Amboseli are year-round destinations, so travel outside peak season is still very rewarding.
How much does a Nairobi to Mombasa safari cost?
The price depends on the number of days, your choice of lodges and beach hotel, group size, season, and whether you drive, fly or take the train. Park fees and a private safari vehicle make up a large share of the cost.

Yes. The route works well for families because the drives are broken up by lodge stops, and the trip ends with time to relax at the beach.
Salt Lick Lodge is especially popular with children. Some lodges have age policies, so tell us your children’s ages and we’ll recommend suitable properties.
Can I start the safari in Mombasa and end in Nairobi instead?
Yes. Every itinerary can run in reverse, starting at the coast and finishing in Nairobi for your international flight home.
Is the safari private, or will I share a vehicle?
All our safaris are private. You have your own 4×4 safari vehicle with a pop-up roof and a dedicated driver-guide, so you set the pace, stop as long as you like for sightings, and adjust the plan along the way.
